  • Vice-president of the socialist and social democratic group (PSE) in the European Parliament responsible for communications, EU-enlargement issues, the Wider Europe and Transatlantic relations (2004-2009)
  • Member of the EP delegations for Romania. Moldova and South Eastern Europe
  • Member of the EP delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assemblee (1999-2004)


Wrote many articles and books in the Dutch language on interception, the enlargement of the EU, Europe-US relations, the role of Islam in Mediterranean politics, campaigning, the issue of the Roma. The following recent publications are available in English and can be downloaded from this website.
